2010 Compost Bin Sale
For the eleventh year in a row, the Nashua Garden Club, the Division of Public Works
Solid Waste Department and the Nashua Recycling Committee are organizing a Spring
sale of Backyard Compost Bins and Kitchen Waste pails. We also have a NEW product
for sale this year- Systern Rain Barrels. This program is coordinated through
the Northeast Resource Recovery Association.
Backyard composting creates a rich soil amendment that can be added to plants and
gardens or used as mulch for trees and shrubs. It is estimated that 25 percent of
the average household waste consists of yard trimmings and kitchen scraps. Nearly
800 bins have been sold in Nashua during the last 9 years, which, if used properly,
would have diverted more than 950 tons of compostable material from being buried in
the landfill.
The Backyard Compost Bins are round and black, made of 100 per cent
recycled plastic; stand about 33"; are 35" in diameter; and have a capacity of 80
gallons. An instruction book comes with the bin, which sells for $47.00.
The Kitchen Waste Pail is an oval shaped plastic container which is
beige and white with a closable lid and handle; has a 2 gallon capacity and sells
for $10.00.
The NEW Systern Rain Barrel is tan in color and is made of 50 percent
recycled plastic. It has a holding capacity of 55 gallons and has a mosquito mesh
to keep out bugs and leaves. It can easily attach to an existing downspout system
and has overflow capability to another Systern or to ground run-off. Rain water is
an excellent water source for lawns, plants and gardens and using a rain barrel
can cut your household water bill significantly! Normally
retailing for up to $120, this barrel is available for $65.00.
Posters containing order forms will be set up at various locations throughout Nashua
including the City Clerk's office at City Hall and the Solid Waste Department, Four
Hills Landfill, 840 W. Hollis Street. You can also visit the City of Nashua web site
www.gonashua.com and look under
City Departments, then Public Works, then Solid Waste for a link to the order form that
you can print out from your computer.

- Checks should be made out to the Nashua Garden Club.
- Orders for all products are payable in advance.
- Deadline for ordering is APRIL 2nd, 2010.
- Pickup of all products will be on SATURDAY APRIL 24th, from 8:00am to 12noon at the Nashua Recycling Center.
